Olympus Optical Co. (UK) Limited

Client overview

Olympus Optical Co (UK) Limited was formed in 1975 and is the premier supplier of cameras, digital cameras, voice recorders, microscopes and blood analysers. Olympus has been a client of Nixe since 1996.

Nixe have supplied a range of services to Olympus including network infrastructure design and build, internet and email services and security and software development.

Networks
Olympus was suffering from a network unable to cope with the demands of a growing and successful business and the introduction of cutting edge technology. The network was both slow and incompatible with the company's plans for expansion.

Olympus used Nixe to plan and implement an upgrade to the enterprise wide network to ethernet to support 120 users. Nixe also arrange for the domestic UK branches to be connected to the company's headquarters in London. As part of this upgrade, Nixe also introduced a standard operating system across the company and devised a standard build for all machines within the company.

Internet and email
In 1997 Olympus had a rudimentary connection to the Internet via modems. This resulted in high cost, slow speed and restricted access to the Internet for employees and presented a poor external corporate image to customers and clients.

As a result of the implementation of an updated network, Nixe was able to connect every employee to the Internet and email, reduce costs, improve speed and security.

Software development
Building on this new network topology, Nixe were able to develop new bespoke software to integrate the multiple platforms existing within Olympus. This was developed in Visual Basic, integrating the stability of DB2 running on AS/400 with the user friendly interfaces running on Windows workstations. This demonstrates Nixe's policy of supplier independence and integrating the best available technologies to supply the optimum solution to a business problem.
